INDIAN ARCHITECTURAL IMMERSION
Palaces, Forts and historic monuments Heritage buildings and Culture Urban landscapes and planning Rural landscapes and practices
Indian architecture has multiple styles and each style has been influenced over time by religion, geographical location and climatic conditions.
Early Indian architecture was predominantly influenced by Hinduism and the Hindu Temples are beautiful examples. Hindu Temple architecture also have varied styles like the Dravidian architecture or the Rock-Cut architecture. The basic nature of the Hindu temple remains the same with essential features being the Sanctum Sanctorum or the innermost chamber where the deity is housed, the Shikhara or Vimana that is tower like structure that crowns the Sanctum Sanctorum, the Parikrama or Circumambulation and the Mandapa or Congregation Hall.
Buddhism religious architecture developed in the Indian subcontinent with the Viharas (monasteries), Stupas (place to venerate relics) and Chaityas (shrines or prayer halls). The popular Pagoda is an evolution of the Indian stupa.
With the arrival of the Mughals, the Indo – Islamic and Mughal styles of architecture developed. The Mughal style of architecture is an amalgamation of the Persian, Turkish and Indian architecture.
The British colonised India and the colonial era saw varied styles that included Indo – Saracenic style. The Indo – Saracenic style was also known as the Indo- Gothic, Mughal – Gothic Style and was a used by British architects in many public and government buildings built during the British Raj.
India before the formation of the Indian Union consisted of over 560 princely states and you find Palaces, Forts and Royal homes across the length of breadth of India with most of them having unique styles.
